 Work had brought me to Hyderabad , but before my Monday workshop in Chennai, I found myself with a free weekend. I decided to spend it in Kanchipuram and Chennai , both cities rich in history, temples, and personal memories. The weekend began in Kanchipuram on Saturday morning. I first stopped at my parents’ home , spent some time with them, and shared lunch — a grounding way to start the trip.  This journey began in Hyderabad , where work brought me first. On our last day there, we slipped into vacation mode and visited the palace — its architecture a reminder of the grandeur of the Nizams. We also walked around the bustling Charminar area, weaving through shops and colors, picking up little treasures before the night closed in. As if the city wanted to send us off with a touch of cinema, I even had the chance to meet Ramya Krishnan , the actress who played Rajamata Sivagami in Baahubali . This trip felt extra special because it was about reconnecting. My childhood friend had traveled from India to visit her son in Michigan, and that gave me the perfect reason to plan a trip with my daughter. We flew from DFW into Detroit, where the journey began. Michigan has a calm beauty of its own—wide highways, green stretches, and fresh air. The Drive North The route from Detroit to Traverse City takes you past rolling farmland, small lakes, and quaint towns. Along the way, there are plenty of stops if you want to break up the trip. Frankenmuth, with its Bavarian-style shops and food, is a fun stop, and farther north the 45th Parallel sign makes for a quirky photo op—it marks the halfway point between the equator and the North Pole.   Arrival in Sorrento This vacation was a much-awaited one, shared with my perfect companion. We had been looking forward to it for months, and finally setting foot in Italy felt surreal. We landed in Naples late at night after our connection from London got delayed by two hours. By the time we arrived, we were tired and just ready to get to our stay. Our Airbnb host at CasaRafuolo Paradise had arranged a pickup, and the driver kept us entertained with stories of Pompeii and Sorrento. As we got closer to the Hilton Palace, we switched into the owner’s car because the roads ahead were too narrow for the larger vehicle. He personally came to meet us and drive us up.
