Michigan – Traverse City & Sleeping Bear

This trip felt extra special because it was about reconnecting. My childhood friend had traveled from India to visit her son in Michigan, and that gave me the perfect reason to plan a trip with my daughter.

We flew from DFW into Detroit, where the journey began. Michigan has a calm beauty of its own—wide highways, green stretches, and fresh air. After resting at the apartment, the next morning we enjoyed a hearty breakfast before starting the 4-hour drive north to Traverse City.



The Drive North

The route from Detroit to Traverse City takes you past rolling farmland, small lakes, and quaint towns. Along the way, there are plenty of stops if you want to break up the trip. Frankenmuth, with its Bavarian-style shops and food, is a fun stop, and farther north the 45th Parallel sign makes for a quirky photo op—it marks the halfway point between the equator and the North Pole.



Traverse City

By the time we arrived, Traverse City welcomed us with its small-town charm and lakeside vibe. We stayed in a cozy Airbnb, close enough to walk to restaurants and nightlife. That evening, we had dinner downtown and later stopped at a nearby spot for drinks. Sitting outside, sipping their signature cocktail, and catching up with my friend while my daughter enjoyed the evening too—it was one of those simple, perfect moments.

Traverse City is also known for its wineries and local food culture, and the energy in town balances relaxation with just enough buzz to feel lively without being overwhelming.

Sleeping Bear Dunes



The next morning, we set out on the short 40-minute drive northwest to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. This place is both stunning and steeped in legend. According to Native American folklore, a mother bear and her two cubs swam across Lake Michigan to escape a fire. The cubs never made it, but the mother bear reached the shore and waited on top of the dunes, which became “Sleeping Bear.” The two islands offshore are said to represent her cubs.

Standing on top of the dunes, the view of Lake Michigan stretched endlessly in shades of deep blue. The steep slope down the dunes looked thrilling, but also intimidating. I started partway down before deciding not to continue—it was enough to just take in the scene, the wind, and the immensity of nature.

Fall Colors


I was also hoping to catch the fall colors, but I was a little early. The leaves were just starting to turn, giving hints of the reds, oranges, and golds that Michigan is so famous for. It only made me want to return, because I know the same drive and dunes will look even more magical in peak autumn.

  • Route: Flight DFW → Detroit; drive Detroit → Traverse City ~4 hours; Traverse City → Sleeping Bear ~40 minutes.
  • Stay: Cozy Airbnb in Traverse City (walkable to restaurants and nightlife).
  • Stops on the drive: Frankenmuth (Bavarian charm), Gaylord (Alpine village feel), 45th Parallel marker.
  • Must-try:  The Cherry Capital Old Fashioned  in downtown Traverse City.
  • Photo ops: Traverse City waterfront, Sleeping Bear Dunes overlooking Lake Michigan, scenic drives during fall foliage.
  • Timing tip: Aim for late September or early October to catch the peak colors.

This trip was special in many ways. We were three friends traveling together. For me, born and raised in Mumbai, temple visits were not new — my mother used to take me on temple tours every year, and I would go along with her.   Arrival in Sorrento This vacation was a much-awaited one, shared with my perfect companion. We had been looking forward to it for months, and finally setting foot in Italy felt surreal.
